Group and filter components by location
Overview¶
On the Components page, you can group your component list by location, show each component's location as a column, filter the list to one area of the property, and move a component to a different location without leaving the list. Use this when you think about your property by place, such as the clubhouse or a building, rather than by category.
Grouping, filtering and editing by location appear once your property has at least one location.
Setup¶
Your property needs at least one location. Without any locations, "Location" is not offered in "Group by", and the "Location" column and its filter are not available.
Locations named in a component import are created automatically. See Import components from a CSV file.
To see your property's locations, open any component's detail page and select "Manage Locations" under "Location". This opens the "Manage Locations" page.
Anyone with access to Components can group, show and filter by location. Changing a component's location from the list requires edit access to Components. Without edit access, the "Location" column shows each location, and the cells do not open for editing. See the role reference for which roles have edit access.
How-to¶
Group components by location¶
Select "Components" in the left navigation. This opens the Components page.
Above the component list, open the "Group by:" dropdown and select "Location". This groups the list by location, with every group collapsed.
Each component is placed in the group for its top-level location, however deep its own location is. A component at "Clubhouse > Pool Deck > Pump Room" appears in the "Clubhouse" group.
Components with no location appear in a "No Location" group.
Select a group row to expand or collapse it. To open or close every group at once, select the expand or collapse button next to the "Group by:" dropdown.
To return to the default view, select "Category" in the "Group by:" dropdown.
SmartProperty remembers your "Group by" choice the next time you open Components on the same browser. If you open a property with no locations while your choice is "Location", the list groups by "Category" instead.
Show the Location column¶
Select the "Column Chooser" button at the right end of the toolbar above the list. This opens the "Column Chooser" window.
Check "Location". The "Location" column appears in the list.
The column shows each component's full location path, such as "Clubhouse > Pool Deck > Pump Room". The cell is blank when a component has no location.
Select the "Location" column heading to sort the list by location path. Select it again to reverse the order.
To return the list to its standard columns, select "Reset Defaults" in the "Column Chooser" window. This also clears your filters and sorting, and sets "Group by" back to "Category".
Filter the list by location¶
Show the "Location" column first.
Select the filter icon in the "Location" column heading. This opens your property's location tree, with a search box.
Check one or more locations, then select "OK". The list shows only the components at the locations you checked and at every location beneath them.
Checking a parent location checks all of the locations beneath it. A parent with only some of its locations checked shows as partly checked.
To remove the filter, clear every location in the tree, or select "Clear All Filters" above the list.
The location filter works alongside every "Group by" option and every other filter. For example, filter by "Category" while grouped by "Location", and the list keeps its location groups, showing only matching components. A location group with no matching components is not shown.
Change a component's location from the list¶
Show the "Location" column first.
Select the "Location" cell for the component. This opens the location tree, with a "Search location..." box.
Select the location you want. You can select a location at any level of the tree. The change saves as soon as you select it, and the tree closes.
To take a component out of every location, select "Remove Location" below the tree. The change saves immediately.
If the list is grouped by "Location" and the component's top-level location changes, the component moves to its new group.
The change is recorded in the component's activity, the same as a change made on the component's detail page. To change a location from the detail page instead, see Edit a component.

Troubleshooting¶
If "Location" is not in the "Group by:" dropdown, or the "Location" column is not in the "Column Chooser" window, your property has no locations yet. Add locations with a component import. See Import components from a CSV file.
If a "Location" cell does not open when you select it, check your role's access to Components. See the role reference.
If the list shows fewer components than you expect, check for an active filter. Select "Clear All Filters" above the list to show every component.
To see your property's locations, open any component's detail page and select "Manage Locations" under "Location". This opens the "Manage Locations" page. The link is shown only with edit access to Components, and only once your property has at least one location.
